Kitui drug raid: NACADA seizes Sh1 million cannabis, arrests high-profile suspect

A major crackdown on drug trafficking in Kitui County has resulted in the seizure of cannabis valued at approximately one million shillings and the arrest of a suspected high-profile trafficker. The operation, conducted by the National Authority for the Campaign Against Alcohol and Drug Abuse (NACADA), underscores the government’s renewed efforts to combat the spread of narcotics across the country.

The raid was executed in the early hours of Thursday morning in a well-coordinated operation led by officers from NACADA’s Nairobi headquarters. Authorities carried out simultaneous searches at the suspect’s residence and business premises, indicating a carefully planned mission following weeks of surveillance.

During the operation, officers recovered more than 5,600 rolls of ready-to-use bhang, along with cannabis in other forms. They also seized packaging materials including polythene bags, weighing scales, rolling papers, and rolling flags, all believed to have been used in the distribution of the illegal substance. The scale of the seizure points to an organized trafficking operation targeting local communities.

Speaking after the raid, NACADA Chief Executive Officer Anthony Omerikwa emphasized the Authority’s commitment to protecting vulnerable groups, particularly young people. He noted that the timing of the operation was significant, as schools are currently closed and many children are at home for the holidays.

He warned that drug traffickers often take advantage of such periods when young people are less supervised, making them more susceptible to substance abuse. He reaffirmed that NACADA would not relent in its efforts to dismantle networks that endanger the well-being of communities.

The CEO also praised members of the public for playing a crucial role in the fight against drug abuse. He highlighted the importance of community cooperation, urging citizens to remain vigilant and continue sharing information that can help authorities identify and apprehend offenders.

Residents in the area welcomed the arrest, with one community member describing the suspect as a long-standing menace. According to the resident, many young people had fallen victim to the suspect’s activities, leaving families concerned about the safety and future of their children. The community expressed hope that the legal system would ensure justice is served and prevent a recurrence of such activities.

The arrest comes amid intensified nationwide efforts to combat drug abuse, following renewed calls by William Ruto for stricter enforcement measures. Authorities have been stepping up operations targeting drug networks, with a focus on protecting youth and restoring order in affected communities.

The suspect remains in custody and is expected to face charges related to drug trafficking and possession of narcotics. Law enforcement agencies have encouraged the public to continue reporting suspicious activities to NACADA or the nearest police station.

This operation highlights the ongoing battle against drug abuse in Kenya and the importance of a united front between authorities and citizens. As enforcement efforts intensify, the hope remains that such crackdowns will significantly reduce the availability of illegal drugs and safeguard communities from their harmful effects.
