Controversial political activist Nuru Okanga has ignited a heated debate online after delivering a strongly worded message targeting members of the Luo community, in remarks that many have described as divisive and inflammatory.
In a viral video, Okanga appeared to accuse Luo supporters of disrespecting leaders from his side, warning that tensions between the communities were reaching a breaking point. He claimed that the long-standing relationship between the two groups had already collapsed.
“Urafiki yetu na Wajaluo iliisha siku Raila Odinga alikufa, wacheni kujivuta vuta kwetu. Mtu asijaribu kukanyaga hapa, sababu mimi nitadeal na yeye,” he said.
Okanga went on to express anger over recent incidents involving political figures, alleging that certain leaders had been attacked while others remained silent. He referenced cases involving Peter Salasya and Godfrey Osotsi, suggesting that repeated incidents had pushed tensions to a critical level.
“Hamuwezi kuwa mnapiga viongozi wetu, halafu nyinyi mnataka kukuja hapa tuwapigie makofi. Mlipiga Peter Salasya tukanyamaza, mumepiga Osotsi hatuwezi nyamaza,” he added.
The remarks have since drawn widespread criticism, with many Kenyans calling for restraint and urging leaders and influencers to avoid statements that could fuel ethnic division. Others, however, supported his sentiments, arguing that frustrations have been building over time.
Analysts warn that such rhetoric, especially when shared widely on social media, risks deepening ethnic and political divisions in the country. Kenya’s history has shown that inflammatory statements can quickly escalate tensions if not addressed responsibly.
The incident has once again highlighted the delicate balance of political discourse in the country, where leaders and public figures are increasingly being urged to promote unity and peaceful engagement despite rising political temperatures.
