Homa Bay Town MP Peter Kaluma has stirred a storm of reactions online after making strong and controversial statements directed at leaders and voters from Kenya’s Mt Kenya region.
In his remarks, Kaluma questioned the region’s historical political choices, alleging that they have consistently failed to support Raila Odinga, whom he referred to as “Baba.” He went further to claim that past elections involving Raila were marred by irregularities, a statement that has quickly drawn mixed reactions.
Kaluma also made reference to long-standing historical tensions, suggesting that political divisions between communities have persisted over generations. However, critics have cautioned that such claims risk fueling ethnic polarization if not handled carefully.
The legislator did not stop there. He criticized several opposition figures, including Edwin Sifuna, Babu Owino, and James Orengo, accusing them of actions and sentiments he claimed were disrespectful toward Raila Odinga.
Kaluma further took aim at Babu Owino’s recent political posture, particularly his perceived closeness to Rigathi Gachagua. He suggested that such alliances may be politically motivated, especially in light of future ambitions such as the Nairobi gubernatorial seat.
The remarks have since triggered intense debate across social media platforms. Supporters of Kaluma argue that he is expressing frustrations shared by a section of leaders, while critics have condemned the tone of his statement, urging politicians to avoid rhetoric that could deepen ethnic and political divisions.
Observers note that as Kenya’s political landscape continues to evolve, statements touching on ethnicity and historical grievances tend to generate strong reactions and highlight the need for more measured and unifying discourse.
Kaluma’s comments now add to the growing list of political exchanges shaping national conversations, particularly as leaders position themselves ahead of future electoral contests.
